Tigst Assefa Tessema is an Ethiopian long-distance runner who holds the female world record for the marathon, being the only woman to complete the distance in under two hours and twelve minutes. She has broken several time barriers in marathon running, such as being the first woman to run under 2:14:00 and 2:13:00. Starting as an 800 meters specialist, Tigst was also the first woman to break the 2:00 barrier in that event. She won a bronze medal at the 2013 African Junior Championships at age 16 and later represented Ethiopia in the 2016 Rio Olympics. In 2023, she shattered the previous women's marathon world record by 2:11 minutes with a time of 2:11.53 at the Berlin Marathon.
